  • Mang Wong - Good review sourceI am on my 2nd year of medical school and I don't recommend anyone reading this book until 1-2 months before you take the step. This should not be treated as a text book but as a review book. You should learn everything before reading this. Also another tip is, you should have already or are close to doing at least 6000 questions before going over your review materials. Good luck.
  • Sandra J Hoover - This book changed my worldThis book literally did change my world. I was told by several doctors that I would never have a normal life again, that there was nothing to do apart from taking steroid drugs and eventually removing the colon. In desperation I looked for another way out. This book clearly laid out why it was happening and how to get back to normal. It states that if you follow the guidelines strictly, with no cheating whatsoever that you can get your health back and in some cases the condition will actually be cured forever. I found this to be absolutely true. For anyone who struggles with the pain and isolation of this disease, please get this book and follow it to the letter. I've now been symptom free for 2 years.
  • slabarbe48 - So glad I found this book!I am on day 5 of week 3 and I could not be happier with the results! I was going to wait until I finished my 28 days before writing a review, but I really want to share my experiences with anyone who is considering taking on this program. With 10 days still to go, I have lost 10 pounds and, more importantly, 10 inches! My skin is clear and glowing, my eyes are bright and I wake up refreshed. I came downstairs this morning at 6am and my husband just stopped and stared at me. I asked him what he was looking at and he asked me how I could possibly wake up looking so good :) Trust me...I am 42 years old and I haven't woken up "looking good" in several years!!

Now, to anyone who says that this is about calorie restriction -- that is absolutely incorrect. It is about consuming REAL food, with tons of variety and fueling your body at least 5 times per day. If you have more than 20 pounds to lose, the recommended portion sizes are HUGE. The foods that are eliminated (wheat, corn, soy, dairy, sugar) will naturally reduce overall caloric intake, but the point is to provide your organs with a much needed rest from processing all of the inflammatory, toxic foods that our typical American diet consists of. The more packaged/processed/restaurant food that you currently eat, the more challenging this will be. Personally, my biggest challenges were giving up my morning French press and my evening red wine. But I did it and I am so glad that I did!

If you already cook most of your meals, this plan is easy. There is a large variety of food/ingredients available in all three phases, and you can create whatever you like. I will say that the recipes in her book are fairly bland/boring, but this is coming from someone who lives to cook. I simply spice everything up to my liking with approved herbs, condiments, vinegars, etc... Phases 1 and 2 did cause some initial inner turmoil in the kitchen, as I have not cooked without fat since 1992 -- back when we were all led to believe that we would die of heart disease by 40 if we so much as looked at a coconut.

A lot of reviewers seem to hate phase 2 (protein/veggies). Personally, I DREAD phase 1(fruits/grains). But the point is, there is a physiological reason behind each phase and you just do it! Phase 1 and Phase 2 are only two days each. We can all do anything for two days. You might have some cravings. You might feel what you think is hunger because you are not eating the empty calories that you are used to reaching for. Drink a big glass of water or herbal tea and sit with those feelings -- they really do pass! And when you get to Phase 3 every week (Friday, Sat and Sun in my case) you feel like you are cheating at every meal! Nuts and seeds, and olives and avocados, and coconut milk and olive oil.... Honestly, I have a hard time eating all of the Phase 3 food, but I do it anyway even when I am really not hungry.

My most pleasant surprise on this "diet" is feeling that if I absolutely had to eat this way for the rest of my life, I would happily do it. I am not counting down the days until it is over. I am not planning an outing to my favorite pizza place as soon as I reach my goal. I am no longer a slave to my cravings for CRAP, which is an incredible feeling. OK...I do look forward to a glass of red wine :)

Do yourself a favor and commit to the FULL 28 days. Don't make your own rules/substitutions. Consider not stepping on the scale every single morning -- you will drive yourself crazy. Just trust in it and watch yourself be amazed!
